Local LLM Teaching Lab

Effective September 7, 2026 · Published by Kwok-leong Tang

What the extension handles

Local LLM Teaching Lab is an educational extension for exploring language models, tokenization, token probabilities, and agent tool use. It handles the prompts you enter, generated responses, generation and tool traces, model preferences, and tool settings. These are stored locally in your browser so the application can retain its state.

When you request active-page context, the extension reads the active page's title, URL, selected text, and page text. This information may become part of the conversation or a tool interaction. The extension does not continuously record browsing history, clicks, or keystrokes. Information you enter or include from a page may contain personal or sensitive information; avoid supplying information you do not want processed.

Local processing and downloads

Chat inference and tokenizer encoding run locally using the teaching runtime, supported downloaded models, or eligible Chrome built-in AI. Downloaded model and tokenizer files may be cached on the device. Model and tokenizer downloads connect to Hugging Face and its delivery infrastructure, which receive ordinary request metadata such as an IP address and the requested file. Tokenizer input text is encoded locally rather than sent to Hugging Face for tokenization.

Optional remote tools

Remote MCP services are optional and require consent in the application. When enabled and used, the extension sends tool arguments to the selected service and receives results. Arguments can contain information from your prompt or page context. Supported remote services include the Wikidata MCP service at wd-mcp.wmcloud.org and the calendar conversion service at calendar-converter.098484.xyz. These services receive request metadata and handle requests under their own practices. Consent is retained in local settings; it is not necessarily requested again for each tool call.

Purpose and sharing

The extension uses this information to provide its educational chat, token inspection, page-context, and tool-trace features. The current extension has no advertising or analytics integration and no publisher-operated conversation-upload service. Data is not sold, used for unrelated advertising, or used for creditworthiness or lending decisions. Optional tool requests transmit their arguments to the service needed to perform the requested function.

Retention and control

Application state and cached model files remain in browser storage until removed or replaced. Users can disable optional remote tools and manage extension data through Chrome. Removing local extension data does not delete copies exported by the user or data already received by a remote service; remote retention is governed by that service. Removing the extension clears its extension storage, while Chrome-managed built-in model files are managed separately by Chrome.
